Audi is getting a new head of research and development (R&D), Ulrich Hackenberg, who will replace Wolfgang Dürheimer.
Hackenberg is regarded as Volkswagen’s best engineer and is currently Volkswagen’s R&D chief, but will now be tasked with making Audi more competitive in the luxury marketplace. Currently, BMW is seen as the technology leader thanks to the German automaker’s Efficient Dynamics technology. And sales have shown that Audi is slowly falling behind, especially in China.
This isn’t the first time Hackenberg will be involved with Audi, having been in charge of the concept and project management for the Audi 80, A2, A3, A4, A6, A8, and TT models. Most recently in 2007, he joined the Volkswagen Board of Management as development chief. He is widely considered the father of the German automaker’s modular strategy.
