Audi is working on a plan to double its SUV offerings by 2020 to better position itself in the growing luxury SUV market.

The German brand is developing Q2, Q4 and Q6 models to add to its current three SUV lineup, which consists of the Q3, Q5 and Q7. The brand’s SUVs will roughly mirror Audi’s car lineup, trying to offer something for everyone.

Premium car makers have been pumping out new SUVs based on demand, which is apparently set to jump 36 percent by 2018, according to IHS Automotive.

The push for more Audi SUVs is part of Volkswagen’s goal to become the world’s largest automaker by 2018. Audi accounted for 48 percent of Volkswagen’s operating profit in the first nine months of 2012, an impressive figure considering it only sold 14 percent of the group’s cars.

The compact Q2 will be based on the Crosslane Concept (shown above) that debuted in Paris last year, while the Q6 could be built in Audi’s Mexico plant alongside the Q5.

Audi is hoping to boost SUVs to 40 percent of the brand’s sales: 15 percent higher than their current volume.
